What is R-Lipoic Acid?

R-lipoic acid is the naturally occurring, biologically active form of alpha lipoic acid (ALA). ALA is a sulphur-containing fatty acids that functions as a powerful antioxidant and metabolic cofactor. It is synthesised in small amounts within the human body and is also found in trace quantities in certain foods such as spinach, broccoli and tomatoes.

The body preferentially recognises and utilises R-lipoic acid compared to standard racemic alpha lipoic acid, making it more bioavailable and effective at lower doses.

R-lipoic acid is well recognised for its powerful antioxidant capabilities that can help to protect cell membranes, mitochondria, and intracellular structures from oxidative stress. One study found that treatment with R alpha lipoic acid improved insulin sensitivity and levels of glucose, triglycerides, and LDL‐cholesterol in the blood of rats with type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome. Moreover, another study showed that supplementing ALA led to decreased fasting glucose levels, triglycerides and homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance in patients with metabolic diseases.

For instance, one study found that ALA supported the management of neuropathic pain, which is chronic pain associated with damaged or diseased nerves.
