What is Lactobacillus johnsonii?
Lactobacillus johnsonii (L. johnsonii) is a well-studied probiotic bacterium belonging to the lactic acid bacteria group. It is a naturally occurring microorganism found in the human gastrointestinal tract (particularly in the small intestine) as well as in fermented foods and dairy environments.
Health Benefits:
Supports Digestive Health
L. johnsonii supports the maintenance of a healthy gut microbiotia, increasing beneficial bacteria and limiting the overgrowth of harmful bacteria. Studies show that L. johnsonii can also inhibit intestinal inflammation and produce organic acids such as lactic acid which effect the gut pH making it less habitable for many pathogens. Research suggests that through these benefits to gut health, L. johnsonii can help to prevent and alleviate symptoms of various diseases, including inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), intestinal infections, colitis, and E. coli-induced diarrhoea.
Boosts Immunity
L. johnsonii may have immune system boosting properties, allowing it to help protect the body from infections and maintain good health. One study showed that supplementation with L. johnsonii was able to modulate immune system cells and helped to reduce respiratory viral infection in mice. This probiotic may enhance immune function by balancing gut flora, increase T-regulatory cells and modulating dendritic cell activity.
Supports Cognitive Function
Interest in the gut-brain axis has been rapidly growing with research repeatedly highlighting the importance of the relationship between gut health and cognitive health. Studies suggest that through the positive effects L. johnsonii can have on digestive health, it may also influence cognitive function. For instance, one study evidenced that treatment with L. johnsonii reduced stress-induced memory dysfunction in mice through modulating the gut-brain axis, supporting the balance of gut microbiotia and enhancing gut development.
Typical Use:
Due to its range of potent health benefits L. johnsonii is typically used in capsule and powder form supplements intended to increase digestive health and boost the immune system. L. johnsonii can be used in either a single-strain probiotic or in combination with other probiotics as part of a multi-strain probiotic blend.
