What is Sage?

Sage, botanically known as Salvia officinalis, is a perennial evergreen herb belonging to the mint family. It is native to the Mediterranean region and is characterised by soft, grey green leaves with a strong, earthy aroma. Sage is well known for its culinary value, however this special herb also has a history of use in traditional medicines and is still used as an ingredient within health promoting supplements.

Reduces Symptoms of Menopause

Menopause is a natural phase of life marked by many changes caused by shifts in hormone levels. During menopause, many women experience symptoms like hot flushes, sleep disturbances, emotional dysregulation, and fatigue, which can significantly impact quality of life and wellbeing. Research evidences that sage may naturally reduce many of these negative symptoms. For instance, one study found that treatment with sage led to notable decreases in the occurrence and severity of hot flushes experienced by menopausal women, and a further study found that sage reduced hot flushes, night sweats, panic and fatigue in postmenopausal women.

Sage has a long and well documented history of use dating back thousands of years. The herb’s name derives from the Latin salvare, meaning to heal or save, reflecting its historical reputation as a restorative plant. Sage was used to promote fertility in ancient Egypt, while Greek and Roman physicians valued it for its role in digestion, wound care, and memory support. 

Typical Use:

Sage has a strong savoury taste and is often used in flavouring meats and cooking soups and pasta dishes. The leaves of this herb are also used in functional herbal teas brewed to support digestion and throat health.

The powerful health benefits of sage has led to its use within supplements, particularly those formulated to enhance cognition, relieve symptoms of menopause or provide antioxidant support.
