Pectinase

Pectinase

What is Pectinase?

Pectinase is a group of naturally occurring digestive enzymes responsible for breaking down pectin, a complex carbohydrate found in the cell walls of fruits and vegetables particularly in apples, citrus fruits, berries, and pears. Humans lack the ability to synthesise pectinase, and therefore it can be beneficial to supplement this enzyme, particularly for those who have fruit and vegetable rich diets. Pectinase enzymes are most commonly derived through the fermentation of fungi, such as Aspergillus niger, and are widely used in food processing and digestive enzyme formulations.

Health Benefits:

Supports Digestion

Pectinase helps break down pectin into simpler sugars that can be absorbed by the body more easily, supporting the digestive process specifically for plant foods such as fruit and vegetables. By breaking down plant cell walls, pectinase may enhance the release and absorption of nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, and polyphenols from food.

Undigested pectin can ferment in the gut, leading to gas production and symptoms such as bloating, cramping and abdominal pain. Pectinase may help limit this process by enhancing the digestion of pectin, supporting greater digestive comfort.

Supports Metabolic Health

Research indicates that pectinase may be beneficial for metabolic health and suggests this enzyme may have hypoglycaemic effects aiding in managing blood glucose levels. Additionally, it has been suggested that more soluble fibres, such as pectin, help to enhance gut viscosity and reduce the re-absorption of bile acids. Through this there may then be an increase in the synthesis of bile acids from cholesterol that helps the poor circulation of blood cholesterol.

Promotes Immune Function

Pectinase may have immune boosting properties as it plays a significant role in modulating immune system functions through the synthesis of bioactive oligosaccharides with powerful anti-inflammatory effects. Moreover, this enzyme’s antioxidant properties, resulting from the release of phenolic compounds during digestion, may help combat oxidative stress, which is linked to the development of various chronic diseases.

Typical Use:

Pectinase is regularly used within supplements, particularly as an ingredient within digestive enzyme blends aimed at supporting the digestion of fibre and plant foods.

Pectinase is also used within food and beverage production to clarify fruit juices and wines by breaking down pectin haze, as well as improve fruit juice yield and enhance the texture of fruit-based products.
