Myo Inositol

Myo Inositol

What is Myo Inositol?

Myo inositol is a cyclic carbohydrate compound that is naturally produced in the body from glucose and has valuable functional properties that play an important role in cell signalling and hormone balance. It has been linked to various powerful health benefits, notably the potential to help support individuals with PCOS.

Health Benefits:

PCOS Support

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a complex endocrine or hormone condition linked to various negative symptoms including irregular periods, infertility, acne and excess facial and/or body hair. While there is currently no cure for PCOS, research indicates that myo inositol may be able to help manage PCOS and its symptoms. One particular study found that following treatment with myo inositol 68% of the female patients diagnosed with PCOS showed restored menstrual cycle regularity, as well as significant reductions in luteinizing hormone, fasting serum insulin levels, and insulin resistance.

Metabolic Support

Myo inositol can help to improve glucose metabolism and can assist the body’s natural insulin response, inhibiting duodenal glucose absorption and reducing blood glucose rises via a competitive affinity for the same transporter system. Therefore, myo inositol may support healthy weight management when combined with lifestyle changes such as increased exercise and a balanced diet.

Mood Balance

Myo inositol is thought to have a calming effect on the nervous system as it supports neurotransmitter pathways linked to anxiety, mood stability and cognitive function. Myo Inositol may be a good supplement to consider when looking to support restful sleep, maintain feelings of calmness and reduce negative symptoms of anxiety and depression.

Typical Use:

Myo inositol is commonly used in the form of powder and capsule supplements that are often aimed at supporting the management of PCOS and promoting metabolic health. Sometimes it is combined with other ingredients including D-chiro inositol and folate to provide wider reproductive health support.

Myo inositol can also be consumed through foods such as nuts, beans, cantaloupe and some citrus fruits, and grains.
