Lactobacillus paracasei

Lactobacillus paracasei

What is Lactobacillus paracasei?

Lactobacillus paracasei (L. paracasei) is a species of beneficial lactic acid bacteria commonly classified as a probiotic. It naturally inhabits the human gastrointestinal tract, oral cavity and is also found in certain fermented foods. This bacteria exhibits high survival rates within the gastrointestinal tract, and is resilient against gastric acid, bile salts, and digestive enzymes, contributing to its value for use within probiotic supplements.

Health Benefits:

Supports Digestive Health

Lactobacillus paracasei helps maintain a balanced intestinal microbiota by supporting a healthy gut environment and conducting antibacterial activity by inhibiting the growth of pathogens. There are various mechanisms through which L. paracasei can exhibit antibacterial effects including competing with pathogens for nutrients and the synthesis of antimicrobial compounds. Moreover, L. paracasei may aid effective lactose digestion by producing lactase, suggesting that it may be beneficial for managing lactose intolerance symptoms such as gas and bloating.

May Modulate the Immune System

This probiotic has been suggested to have immunomodulating properties that may allow it to support healthy immune responses and protect the body from infections. One study found evidence that suggests that Lactobacillus paracasei L-30 may be able to stimulate the immune system, enhancing immune responses by activating phagocytosis in macrophages which is key to destroying pathogens and apoptotic cells.

Could Promote Skin Health

Emerging studies indicate that L. paracasei may help to reduce skin sensitivity and promote skin comfort. For example, one study found that oral supplementation with the NCC 2461 strain of L. paracasei successfully decreased skin sensitivity and increased the rate of skin barrier function recovery. The link between probiotic intake, including L. paracasei, and the gut-skin axis shows great potential, however further research is required to develop a comprehensive understanding of how this relationship works.

Typical Use:

L. paracasei is regularly used as an ingredient in dietary supplements and is included in both multi-strain probiotic blends and single-strain formulations. Such products are typically designed to provide digestive support, microbiome balance and enhance immune function.

This probiotic is also often added to functional foods such as yogurts and fermented dairy products, as well as probiotic drinks.
