What is Lactase?
Lactase is a digestive enzyme produced in the small intestine that breaks down lactose (the natural sugar found in milk and dairy products) into glucose and galactose, which can then be absorbed in the small intestine.
In individuals with low lactase production, lactose is not fully digested, leading to symptoms commonly referred to as lactose intolerance. Lactose intolerance causes significant digestive discomfort following consuming dairy, often involving bloating, gas and diarrhoea.
Health Benefits:
Supports Digestive Health
Lactase is known for its contributions to digestive health, particularly through its function of breaking down lactose and reducing undigested lactose in the gut, which is the primary cause of digestive discomfort in lactose intolerance. Efficient lactase activity supports healthy nutrient absorption and plays a crucial role in enhancing the bioavailability of minerals like calcium, magnesium, and zinc.
Improves Dairy Tolerance
Due to its vital role in the digestion of lactose, this enzyme holds valuable potential for enabling individuals who struggle with lactose intolerance to consume foods containing dairy. By enhancing the digestion of lactose, lactase may alleviate common symptoms of lactose intolerance such as bloating and stomach pain. One study found that oral supplementation of lactase led to significant reductions in clinical symptoms of lactose intolerance including bloating, abdominal pain and diarrhoea.
Assists Bone Health
The role of calcium in maintaining bone health is well evidenced and therefore through supporting the digestion lactose, which in turn acts as an enhancer of intestinal calcium absorption, lactase may contribute to bone strength and health. One study found that postmenopausal women with primary lactase deficiency had poorer bone density than healthy control individuals. This suggests that lactase plays a role in supporting bone health and that deficiency in this enzyme may leave bones brittle, weak and vulnerable to fractures.
Typical Use:
Lactase is commonly used in the form of capsule of tablet supplements often in enzyme blend formulas. Such products are often taken just before or with meals containing lactose to best provide digestive support and relief from lactose intolerance.
Lactase is also available in the form of drops which can be added directly to milk to pre-digest lactose.
