Himalayan Pink Salt

What is Himalayan Pink Salt?

Himalayan pink salt is a naturally occurring rock salt mined primarily from the Khewra Salt Mine in the Punjab region of Pakistan, near the Himalayan mountain range. Its distinctive pink hue comes from its trace mineral content including iron, potassium and magnesium. Chemically, Himalayan pink salt is predominantly sodium chloride, much like regular sea salt or table salt, although it contains small quantities of additional minerals that contribute to its colour and flavour profile.

Health Benefits:

May Support Electrolyte Balance

Himalayan salt can contain up to 84 trace minerals, allowing it to provide vital electrolytes such as calcium, potassium, and magnesium alongside sodium chloride. These electrolytes can support hydration, healthy muscle contraction, and support the maintenance of fluid balance.

Reduced Processing

Unlike common highly refined table salt, Himalayan pink salt is less refined, minimally processed and does not contain additives or anti-caking agents. It is typically sold in coarse crystals, fine grains or large decorative blocks.

History:

Himalayan pink salt has a long history of use and the Khewra Salt Mine, one of the oldest and largest salt mines in the world, has reportedly been in use since at least the era of Alexander the Great, when local legends suggest that horses discovered the salt rocks. Historically, the salt was valued for food preservation and trade across parts of South Asia and Central Asia, however in recent decades it has gained global popularity, particularly within wellness and natural food movements.

Typical Use:

Himalayan pink salt is commonly used as a finishing salt, as it adds a mild, clean flavour to savoury dishes, salads and roasted vegetables. Fine grades of the salt can also replace regular table salt in cooking, baking and brining. Small amounts are sometimes added to electrolyte drinks or homemade hydration solutions, particularly within endurance sports or wellness communities.
