Fenugreek

What is Fenugreek?

Fenugreek is a plant native to parts of the Mediterranean, Southern Europe, and Western Asia. It is a clover-like herb from the legume family, used as a spice, vegetable, and within traditional medicine. It is known for its distinct maple syrup scent and nutty flavour when cooked.

Fenugreek seeds are nutritionally rich and provide a combination of macronutrients, micronutrients, and bioactive compounds including dietary fibre, protein, iron, magnesium, potassium, B vitamins and phytonutrients such as flavonoids and saponins.

Health Benefits:

Relieves Menstrual Symptoms

Fenugreek has shown great potential for reducing menstrual discomfort by supporting the healthy balance of hormones, with evidence showing that fenugreek extract can increase levels of estradiol, free testosterone and progesterone. One study evidenced that treatment with fenugreek seed powder led to notable decreases in severity of dysmenorrhea symptoms such as fatigue, headache, nausea, and lack of energy as well as significant reductions in pain severity. Additionally, research has shown that fenugreek extract can alleviate negative postmenopausal symptoms including hot flashes, night sweats, irritability and vaginal dryness.

Supports Metabolic Health

Fenugreek can support metabolic health and healthy blood sugar regulation, which is key to protecting long-term health, preventing the development of diseases and supporting energy. Results of studies have shown that fenugreek can improve systolic blood pressure, decrease fasting plasma glucose levels and reduce waist circumference for those with metabolic syndrome. Moreover, fenugreek has been shown to have powerful antidiabetic effects and may increase insulin levels, suggesting its potential value for treating diabetes.

Boosts Testosterone

Studies indicate that fenugreek may help to boost testosterone levels. For instance, one review of clinical studies found that fenugreek seed extract supplementation can lead to a significant increases in testosterone concentrations. Moreover, as fenugreek seed extracts have been demonstrated to have a positive effect specifically on bioavailable testosterone concentrations, this suggests that the increase in testosterone may have greater physiological effects in the body.

History:

Fenugreek has a long history of use dating back over 4,000 years. It was used in ancient Egypt for embalming and medicinal preparations, and later adopted in Ayurvedic and Traditional Chinese medicine. Historically, it has been used to support digestion, reproductive health, lactation, and recovery from illness. Its enduring use across cultures reflects its broad therapeutic value.

Typical Use:

Both the seeds and leaves of fenugreek have culinary use and are often used in spice blends and in both Indian and Middle Eastern cuisine. Fenugreek can also be used to make a caffeine-free herbal tea by boiling its crushed seeds.

The various health benefits of fenugreek has led to its use in supplements to support blood sugar management and hormonal balance. Supplements containing fenugreek can be found in various forms including capsule, tablet, liquid extracts and tinctures.
