Immortelle

Other Names:

Helichrysum, Everlasting Flower, Curry Plant, Helichrysum italicum (latin name)

What is Immortelle?

Immortelle is a plant native to the Mediterranean with distinct yellow flowers that are renowned for their ability to retain their colour and aroma following being picked. This unique herb contains a range of bioactive compounds that provide valuable health benefits, including flavonoids, terpenes, phytosterols and phenolic acids.

Health Benefits:

Anti-Inflammatory Action

Immortelle is believed to have powerful anti-inflammatory properties and has been used for centuries to treat skin inflammation and support wound healing. The local application of immortelle oil has been shown to reduce local tissue inflammation and accelerate the disappearance of swelling and bruising in patients following plastic and reconstructive chest surgery.

Promotes Liver Health

There are numerous mechanisms through which immortelle may promote liver health. For instance, this extraordinary herb has been known to stimulate liver cell regeneration, supporting the recovery of liver tissues and overall liver function. Beyond this, immortelle may also support healthy liver function through promoting the elimination of waste and toxins from the liver, and preventing damage to liver cells by reducing liver inflammation.

Powerful Antioxidant Action

Immortelle is rich in flavonoids and phenolic compounds which are widely recognised for their powerful antioxidant ability. Antioxidants are key to maintaining good health as they scavenge harmful free radicals, therefore helping to prevent oxidative stress. Oxidative stress can lead to cellular damage and has been consistently linked to the development of various chronic diseases including cardiovascular diseases, neurodegenerative diseases, and diabetes.

History:

Immortelle has an extensive history of use in Mediterranean cultures, with the unique flowers of this plant being used to create infusions and balms in traditional Mediterranean medicine to treat injuries such as burns and bruises. Immortelle was also historically used by the Greeks and Romans for wound care and skin rejuvenation, and held great value for ceremonial use.

Typical Use:

This special plant is often used in supplements due to its various health benefits and is sometimes combined with other synergistic ingredients to provide more extensive benefits, for instance it is used alongside clove extract to provide potent liver support. Immortelle can also be used topically, such as in the form of essential oil used for massages and skincare products due to its restorative, skin-healing, and soothing effects.
