Clove

What is Clove?

Clove is the dried flower buds of Syzygium aromaticum, an evergreen tree native to the Maluku Islands of Indonesia. It is a highly valued aromatic spice known for its distinct warm, sweet and slightly peppery flavour. Cloves contain a variety of vital nutrients including vitamins C and K, minerals such as manganese and calcium, flavonoids and phenolic acids. The diverse nutrient profile of clove allows it to provide numerous impressive health benefits, leading to its use both in traditional medicine systems and in modern supplements.

Health Benefits:

Antioxidant Action

Research has evidenced that clove is an effective antioxidant. Clove contains high levels of flavonoids which are well established as having powerful antioxidant abilities, and help prevent cellular damage by scavenging free radicals that can cause oxidative damage. Oxidative damage is known to contribute to ageing and the development of diseases including neurodegenerative, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases.

Anti-Inflammatory Support

Clove can also provide powerful anti-inflammatory action. One study found that clove essential oil can inhibit the production of several proinflammatory biomarkers and alter signalling pathways critical for inflammation. Through its anti-inflammatory action clove may also support liver health, as chronic inflammation can damage liver cells and contribute to various liver diseases.

Supports Digestive Health

Clove can help alleviate digestive discomfort by easing indigestion, bloating and gas. One study has found that clove essential oil can help regulate intestinal flora effectively and improve intestinal fungal infection in mice with intestinal C. albicans infection, a fungal infection caused by the overgrowth of Candida yeast.

History:

Clove has a rich history of over 2,000 years of use for both traditional medicinal and culinary purposes. Traditional medicinal uses of clove include to treat nausea and ease digestion, support respiratory health, enhance kidney function and warm the body.

Typical Use:

Cloves are regularly used in cooking, with its culinary applications including being used in simmering dishes, curries, spice blends, mulled drinks and desserts.

The various health benefits of clove has also led to the use of its extract being used in supplements aimed at supporting digestion, providing antioxidant protection and boosting the immune system.
