Dimorphandra mollis - fava d'anta - richest source of natural quercetin

Quercetin: Nature’s most abundant flavonoid

What is Quercetin?

Quercetin is a natural flavonoid with a range of health benefits including antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, and is present in many fruits and vegetables – although studies have found that the foods growing conditions may affect their quercetin contents. For example, it has been found that organic tomatoes may have up to 79% more quercetin than conventionally grown ones.

Quercetin is one of the most abundant flavonoids in nature; however there are only a few plants that contain a high enough concentration to be extracted, with fava d’anta (dimorphandra mollis) - a tree native to Brazil - being one of them.

Health benefits

Anti-inflammatory action

Quercetin may reduce inflammation, according to research. In various test tube studies, it was found that quercetin reduced inflammation markers in human cells, whilst in another human study of women with arthritis it was found that taking 500mg of quercetin significantly reduced early morning stiffness, morning pain and after-activity pain.

Could reduce blood pressure

There is promising research to suggest quercetin could reduce blood pressure levels. In one study, mice with high blood pressure were given the flavonoid daily for five weeks. After this time period it was found that their systolic blood pressure had dropped by 18%, and their diastolic blood pressure by 23%. A review of human studies showed that taking a quercetin supplement also reduced blood pressure by an average of 5.8 mm Hg in systolic and 2.6 mm Hg in diastolic.

Powerful antioxidant

Quercetin’s antioxidant properties are more powerful than vitamin C, vitamin E or beta carotene. It works to protect against free radicals - unstable molecules in the body that may increase the risk of disease and accelerate ageing if not controlled.

Anti-histamine effect & hay fever support

Quercetin is understood to be beneficial for those who suffer from hay fever and other allergic conditions. Research suggests that quercetin can stabilise mast cells, which are responsible for releasing histamine during allergic reactions. Its natural antihistamine and anti-inflammatory properties may help to alleviate symptoms such as sneezing, nasal congestion, itching, and watery eyes. Unlike some traditional antihistamines, which may cause drowsiness or fatigue, quercetin provides a natural alternative that supports the body’s response to allergens without sedative side effects. By reducing histamine release, quercetin may help to moderate the body’s allergic response, offering a gentle and effective option for individuals affected by seasonal allergies or allergic rhinitis.

About Dimorphandra Mollis

Our Quercetin supplement is derived from dimorphandra mollis, also known as fava d'anta. D. Mollis is abundant in flavonoids and studies have found quercetin extracted from the tree to have stronger activity in fighting free-radicals than other quercetin sources. Our dimorphandra mollis is also fully traceable and sustainable, with the extraction and sale of quercetin having a significant socio-economic role for the people in that region, who largely depend on its trading for their livelihood.
