Sea Buckthorn has been used for centuries in Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine for a range of health benefits including protection against diabetes, stomach ulcers and skin damage.
It is rich in many nutrients including antioxidants, which could protect the body against ageing and illnesses like cancer and heart disease. The berry also benefits from high contents of potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron and phosphorus, as well as a decent amount of folate, biotin, vitamin C, E and a number of B vitamins.
Promotes heart health
There are a number of ways sea buckthorn may benefit heart health, such as the antioxidants it contains may help to reduce the risk of heart disease by reducing symptoms such as blood clots, blood pressure and blood cholesterol levels. One study concluded that men who were given 5 grams of sea buckthorn a day had significantly lower markers for blood clots after four weeks, compared to those who were given the same amount of coconut oil for the same period. Another study people with high blood pressure saw a decline in levels after taking 0.75ml of sea buckthorn oil for 30 days. Total and ‘bad’ cholesterol, as well as levels of triglycerides also dropped in those who had high cholesterol.
Protects the skin
Researchers believe that due to sea buckthorn’s omega-7 and omega-3 fat content, it may boost skin health. Various studies show that it may help wounds heal more quickly by stimulating skin regeneration. It has also been shown to help the reduction of inflammation after the skin has been exposed to UV rays, protecting against skin damage. There is also some evidence that sea buckthorn may prevent skin dryness and help heal burns, frostbite and bed sores.
Immune system support
Sea buckthorn contains flavonoids that are beneficial plant compounds which researchers believe can strengthen the immune system by increasing resistance to illnesses. It also contains antioxidants that may also defend the body against microbes. Some studies have shown sea buckthorn to prevent the growth of E. coli and give protection against flu, herpes and HIV viruses.
The appropriate dose of sea buckthorn depends on several factors such as the user’s age, health, and several other conditions. However we suggest taking 2 capsules of our Wildcrafted Sea Buckthorn daily, preferably 30 minutes before a meal, or as directed by a healthcare practitioner.
